Mums and Dads

At Northern Beaches Dental, we cater to the needs of your whole family.

Our Mackay based dentists have a special interest in children’s dentistry, and strive to make these first visits to our practice comfortable, educational and fun! We understand the importance of forging positive associations with visits to the dentist, and encouraging a proper oral hygiene routine from a young age.

We have dental books for kids in our office, and we are happy to loan these to you to help your child get used to our environment before their first visit.

Children with a disability can experience exceptional care at our practice, as our team has a special interest in providing compassionate dental solutions, and our practice is designed to accommodate the needs of our diverse client base.

Your child’s first visit

Children should first visit the dentist after their first birthday, or 6 months after their teeth first erupt – whichever comes first. This is a great way to form a healthy relationship with your dentist, and to check for issues such as baby bottle tooth decay. This can be done during your regular check-up, and routine check-ups for your child should follow every six months.

Oral hygiene tips for children

  1. Never put your child to sleep with a bottle of juice or milk. Due to lower salivary flow during sleep and higher susceptibility to cavities and plaque, this can encourage a whole night of tooth decay.
  2. Clean your infant’s gums with a clean, damp cloth twice a day.
  3. When teeth come in, begin brushing them with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and a small dab of toothpaste.
  4. By approximately age 5, your child can learn to brush his or her teeth with proper parental instruction and supervision.
