Fissure Sealants
Fissure sealants can help protect your teeth from tooth decay.
This treatment works by filling the grooves and fissures in your back teeth that are hard to clean properly through regular brushing and flossing. A thin plastic coating is applied to the chewing surfaces of these teeth to fill these grooves, creating a smooth, easy-to-clean and virtually invisible shield of protection against tooth decay.
The treatment
At Northern Beaches Dental, our fissure sealant treatment is completely pain-free and only takes a single appointment. During this appointment:
• Teeth are professionally cleaned and dried.
• An etching solution is applied to the chewing surfaces of the teeth to create a roughened surface in preparation for bonding.
• Fissure sealant is then painted onto the tooth enamel where it bonds directly to the tooth.
• The sealant is then hardened with a curing light.
If proper oral hygiene is maintained, sealants can last for up to 10 years, and can easily be replaced or repaired.
